Much Going on at Barnard School

We have completed nearly a month of our 2012-2013 year here at South Hampton Barnard School and there is much to share and celebrate! Before school even started the PTA organized an Ice Cream Social to welcome me as your new Principal and to allow the students, parents, staff, and community to have an informal meet and greet.  My wife, Helen was able to join us and over fifty people were ably to come by for a nice visit and some refreshments and dessert.

Once the students arrived on August 28 we were off and running with daily routines of classes, recess, lunch and the many assessments that allow the faculty to develop instruction and groupings tailored to student needs and abilities.  In addition to regular classes, students in Grades 1-8 have instruction in Art, Music, Physical Education, Spanish and Technology.  Middle School students also have Health class weekly, Guidance is made available as needed and instrumental instruction is also delivered to students in upper grades.

Students in Grades 7 and 8 participated in Project Adventure on September 6 due to the generosity of our PTA.  Mr. Szeliga, Mr. Asbell, and I were able to go along and share in the team and confidence building activities.

On September 18 we had our Summer Reading Party to celebrate with over 40 students who completed  their reading pledge.  Students (add many staff) had cupcakes and ice cream and were treated to a new book of their choice as a reward for their efforts.

The crowning event of the month was by far our Open House and PTA Cookout.  Nearly 100 hot dogs were served to students, families, and several community members.  A great time was had by all as we shared our incredible facility, faculty, student work and classrooms.  There are plans in the works for future community activities so stay tuned.

Thank you all for your kind words of welcome and support.

Ken Darsney (Mr. "D")
Barnard School Principal
